Domestic connections
Our floor is 60 minutes at mega-hubs (ATL, ORD, DFW, DEN) and 45 at smaller ones — and we pad winter connections at snow-prone hubs further. The 35-minute connections booking sites happily sell are how vacations start in an airport hotel.
International arrivals
Landing from abroad means immigration, baggage claim, customs, re-check and security — again. We want 90 minutes minimum, 2+ hours at JFK, LAX or Heathrow. It feels long until the immigration hall is full.
The last-flight rule
Never connect onto the final departure of the day if an earlier option exists. A missed last flight means a hotel night; a missed mid-afternoon flight means a later seat home.
When tight is fine
Same terminal, same airline, mid-morning, good weather city? 40 minutes can be fine — and we'll tell you when it is. The skill isn't padding everything; it's knowing which connections deserve fear.
